Preparing Your Heart Before the Holidays: A Self Care and Prayer Practice

Before the holidays ramp up take intentional steps to care for your heart. These short, practical routines helped me stay steady during the busiest seasons.

The weeks before the holidays can feel like a race. For caregiver moms they can feel heavy. I learned quickly that if I do not prepare my heart I show up tired and scattered. When Jace was small and we were in and out of hospitals I could have been swallowed by the season. Instead I started small practices that changed everything.

Here are gentle practices you can add now.

  1. Five minute morning centering
Before the noise begins, take five minutes to breathe, read a short scripture, or pray. Even a small pause steadies you.
  2. Make a short list of non negotiables
Decide on two or three things this season that are truly necessary for your family. For us it is presence, one small celebration for Jace, and keeping routines steady.
  3. Evening unloading ritual
Before bed write three things you are grateful for and one thing you hand to God tomorrow. This lightens the heart.
  4. Create a sanctuary corner
Designate a chair with a blanket and soft music where you can breathe for five to ten minutes. My back hurts so sitting there and listening to worship often becomes my reset.
  5. Ask for one small favor daily
If someone offers help accept a small thing. Those minutes of rest multiply.
  6. Plan an emergency kit for bad days
Keep a go bag for yourself: favorite tea, neck wrap, list of contacts, and a note of encouragement you wrote to yourself.
  7. Choose a short prayer phrase
When you feel rushed repeat: God is with me, or Today I breathe. Say it until you feel steadier.
  8. Lower expectations intentionally
Write down what can be let go this season. The goal is presence not perfection.
  9. Reach for spiritual support
Ask a pastor to pray, or join a short prayer group. Being covered in prayer changed how I walked through hard seasons.
  10. Celebrate small wins
If you read one story to your child or shared a dessert, call it a victory.

I pray for you, you pray for me, and together we watch God change things. 💜
