n our world, milestones look different.
They don’t always follow the neat little charts you get handed at well-child checkups. They don’t always line up with what other kids are doing in preschool, elementary school, or even high school. And for a long time, that used to sting.
I would watch other parents cheer as their kids took their first steps, rode their first bike, or graduated from one stage to the next. And while I was genuinely happy for them, I also had moments where I grieved what those moments might never look like for us.
But then something shifted.
I realized that just because Jace’s milestones look different doesn’t make them any less worth celebrating.
In fact, they are miracles in motion.
When Jace responds to music with laughter, that is a milestone. When he vocalizes in a new way, that is a milestone. When he sits comfortably through a new therapy routine, that is a milestone.
It might not make it onto a baby book page or a social media highlight reel, but it makes it onto my heart. Because every single step forward matters.
I’ll never forget the first time Jace held eye contact with me longer than usual. It wasn’t something the world would have noticed. But I noticed. And I cried. Because in that moment, I felt so deeply connected to him. That was a milestone that reminded me of how present and alive his spirit really is.
Here’s the thing: milestones don’t have to look like anyone else’s to be celebrated.
They don’t have to be flashy or expected. They don’t have to meet the timeline that someone else wrote down. They just have to matter to us.
And they do. Every single one of them.
So I’ve made a promise to myself. I will celebrate the moments that may not make sense to everyone else. I will cheer loud. I will cry happy tears. I will write them down so I never forget. Because these are the markers of our journey. They tell the story of resilience, of faith, and of joy that doesn’t quit.
If you’re a mama walking a similar path, let me remind you: your child’s milestones are worth celebrating. No matter how small they seem. No matter how different they look.
Because love doesn’t measure progress by checklists. Love celebrates the miracle of what is.
And in this, I see God’s faithfulness over and over again!
